Poor Planning

After a flawless Halloween campaign which entailed dispensing chocolate bars to:
  • 4 witches
  • 2 vampires
  • 1 ghost
  • 1 generic superhero
I awake to find myself the victim of poor planning.

I should have twigged yesterday at the supermarket, where it seemed that the entire population of Mainz was shopping in preparation for the Apocalypse. I failed to take the step in logic that states: after All Hallows Eve, comes All Hallows Day (Allerheiligen) - which is a public holiday here in Rheinland Pfalz.

Luckily, I always have a few batches of soup or some such on hand in the freezer for times when housewifely ennui strikes and I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a fork than cook dinner. We are saved (by pea and ham soup). Huzzah!

So not a holiday here in Berlin that when I asked my husband what the holiday was, he didn't know. (He also works in Munich, where it was a holiday- he just worked anyway:-)).
Yeah for soup! Yesterday I made Lentil soup, but somehow it turned out to actually be stew?

My goodness, Helen, what's gotten into you...posts two days in a row!! November 1st and 2nd are festive days in México, honoring the dead (actually I'm impressed with that culture's ritual for their dead), and I wish I were there, but since that's not possible, I guess I, too, will follow your lead with a little soup-making activity--but not for the dead. I turn into a soup-making machine during the winter. Huzzah!!

Hurrah for pea and ham soup! I wish I had a freezer :( I got the best of both worlds on Tuesday: my Mainzer husband had the day off work but everything was still open in Wiesbaden :)

@G - there is nothing wrong with a good, hearty Lentil stew! I'm often caught out by the more obscure religious public holidays here in Germany. But, a day off is nothing to be sneezed at.

@Kate - I love soup at this time of year. It is so comforting.

@Frau Dietz - I'm glad you got to have your cake and eat it too (figuratively speaking, of course). It is exciting to meet another local blogger!

Likewise! I'm in Mainz once or twice a week at the moment so give me a shout (there's a link to my email on my blog - I couldn't find one on here so apologies for the public invitation) if you fancy a coffee sometime...
